Are hot air balloons safe?
Absolutely. Hot air balloons are one of the safest forms of flying, and Balloon Rides Across America pilots adhere to rigorous safety standards to make sure your flight is as secure as possible.
How high do hot air balloons fly?
Typically, most pilots navigate low-level flights, roughly between the tree tops and 3,000 feet.
Three-thousand feet? Sheesh, that sounds high—I’m scared of heights.
Actually, unlike standing on top of a tall building, there’s no relative perspective when looking at the ground from the basket of a hot air balloon. Flyers rarely experience vertigo.
But I’m prone to motion sickness, too...
Not to worry. The sensation of riding in a hot air balloon is nothing like a car ride or standing on a boat. Once a balloon is aloft, it travels at the same speed as its environment, so there’s no feeling of motion whatsoever. Nothing but a smooth, gentle ride. The sensation of ballooning is the absence of sensation.
Are there any age restrictions?
We don’t recommend children under the age of 6 years ride in a balloon.
So is it cold up there? What should I wear?
The relative temperature difference to the ground is negligible, so you should wear whatever clothing you’re comfortable in on the ground on any given day. Because hot air balloons travel at the same speed as the winds surrounding them, wind chill is eliminated. In fact, traveling in a hot air balloon can feel slightly warmer than ground temperatures, so it’s generally not a good idea to overdress, particularly in the summer months.
How long will my flight last?
From launch to landing to travel back to the launch site, you can expect each adventure to last roughly three hours, with about one hour of time aloft.
Are cameras allowed on board?
Of course. Encouraged, in fact. You’ll see breath-taking panoramic views that you’ve never seen before, and trust us—you’ll want to cherish those views forever.
I live in Maine, so how do I schedule a BRAA flight for my vacation in Colorado?
Simply peruse our list of nearly 100 flight locations across the United States, call or e-mail our reservation center with your selection, phone us a few hours before launch time on your flight day to check weather conditions, then get excited to fly!
How far in advance should I book my flight?
Generally, a week to 10 days gives us ample time to schedule your flight. However, if there is a specific date, or special occasion that is Important to you, schedule your special date far in advance to lock in the reservation. (Unlike theatre seats, there are a limited number of spaces available each day in hot air balloons.) But do not hesitate to call us on short notice; there may be a ride available on the day you desire. We offer flights year round in nearly all areas of the country. Weather, and temperature play an important part in ballooning, so there is a most desired season in the northern and southern portion of the country.
What if it’s raining on my flight day?
BRAA pilots will not fly in inclement weather. Your safety and comfort are our top priorities. If there’s a storm the day of your flight, you can either reschedule your flight for another day or request a refund (see terms and conditions).
What if it rains all week and I don’t get to fly before returning home from vacation?
Not a problem. We’ll work with you to reschedule another exciting flight somewhere closer to home at a later date. If that doesn’t interest you, you can request a refund (see terms and conditions).
